Sugar Paper Mache Boxes
Paper Mache Box

Sugar Paper Mache Boxes are a personalized treat for friends or family. This paper mache technique uses an edible paste. Make each one different, as you play around with different sizes and shapes.  It's a fun activity for kids (and adults) in the kitchen.
You can experiment with different scraps of pretty paper to make all kinds of containers. Use these cute containers to hold odds and ends in a bedroom or playroom, or fill with your favorite treats to give away!   Personalize your gift and tailor it to each individual. If your son loves blue, use different hues and blue designs. If your friend loves the beach, use fun images of sand, sun and water fun!
Just mix the paste using both cold and hot water, let cool and paint on the backside or your favorite designed or colored paper. Cut out the paper in circles or other shapes - you can have fun with different shapes and make it your own.
Once dry, you'll have a masterpiece that is unlike any other. Use any kind of color, design or pictures you want to make this paper mache craft all your own.

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons Dixie Crystals Extra Fine Granulated Sugar
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • Small craft paper boxes or containers (available at craft stores)
  • Scrapbook or colorful paper
  • Small paint brush

  1. In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar and cup of cold water.
  2. Add 1 cup boiling water.
  3. Stir, then let the mixture cool down.
  4. While cooling, take scrapbook paper and cut out  1-inch circles (you can use circle punch, too) to make several to cover the entire container.
  5. "Paint" backs of paper circles with paper mache solution and glue circles in lines or designs onto the containers.

  6. Once dry, fill with tissue paper and a snack for a sweet and creative treat or gift.  You can also use these pretty containers to decorate a room or hold odds and ends.
