Spooky Floating Ghosts

Spooky Floating Ghosts

Here's a fantastically fun project that you and your kids can do together. These sweet (and not spooky) floating ghosts can be made with four main ingredients - white fabric, a balloon, sugar and fishing line or string.

Easy and fun to make with your kids, you can use these every year - as the ghosts are sturdy.  Try the project with a wide variety of balloon sizes to create an entire Floating Ghost family.

Watch as we show you how to make these Floating Ghosts.

  • Cheesecloth
  • Balloons
  • 1 cup Dixie Crystals Extra Fine Granulated Sugar
  • 1 cup warm water
  • Fishing line
  • Black felt or vinyl
  • Modge Podge

  1. Cut squares of cheesecloth according to your preferred size.
  2. Mix water and sugar in a bowl.
  3. Dip cheesecloth into sugar mixture, covering it completely.
  4. Cover cheesecloth over an inflated balloon. Be sure that you coat the top of the balloon (ghost’s head) thickly so that it will hold up when it is hung. Run the ends of the cheesecloth through your fingers to keep the coating lighter on the bottom as it will take a long time to dry if you don’t.
  5. To dry, place the balloon on top of a glass so that bottom of the cheesecloth ghost doesn’t touch the surface.
  6. Place ghost so it is sitting on top of a glass on a cookie sheet to catch the sugar water run-off until dry.
  7. Put fishing line through top of the ghost’s head and then loop it up through the bottom. Tie in a knot.
  8. Cut black circles from felt or vinyl for eyes and mouth and attach with sticker backing or modge podge.
  9. Hang ghost until the eyes and mouth are completely dry.
