11 Delicious Brown Sugar Hacks
Brown Sugar. It’s such a versatile sweetener and when used in even the simplest ways, it brings out the flavor in everyday foods. We’ve gathered some brown sugar hacks from our 1957 Alice in Brown Sugarland and 1959 Icings, Frostings and Cake Decorating Made Easy vintage cookbooks to make your snack and meal time quick, easy and full of sweet goodness.
- Bread n’ Butter n’ Brown Sugar - A quick snack so sweet, children sometimes prefer it to cookies or cake for dessert.
- Brighten Breakfast Cereal - Sprinkle Dixie Crystals Brown Sugar generously over piping hot cereal...or, crunchy, cold cereal. Children will scrape the bowl and ask for more.
- Glamour Glaze for baked ham - Mix together 1 cup brown sugar, 1 teaspoon dry mustard and enough orange juice or pineapple juice to moisten. Or combine 3/4 cup Dixie Crystals Brown Sugar with 3/4 cup crushed pineapple. About 30 minutes before end of baking, trim off rind from ham, spread with glaze and return to oven.
- Bananas n’ Cream n’ Brown Sugar - For each serving, slice a ripe banana into a pretty dish; sprinkle generously with Dixie Crystals Brown Sugar and cover with a cream or half and half. Brown sugar brings out the full flavor of bananas. A good breakfast idea.

- Apples Today - Try this new way to serve the apple-a-day. Halve, core, but do not peel, 6 medium Granny Smith apples. Place cut side up in baking dish. Fill center of each with Dixie Crystals Brown Sugar. Top with 1/2 slice pineapple; sprinkle with cinnamon. Pour 1/2 cup pineapple juice into bottom of dish. Bake at 350 degrees F. for 1 1/2 hours.
- Peach Perfection - For a quick, easy dessert with a gourmet touch, serve well-drained, canned peach halves this way. Just before serving, dot peach halves with butter, sprinkle lightly with Dixie Crystals Brown Sugar and broil 5 minutes or until brown.
- Want a frosting in a hurry? Just let a 9x13x1 1/2 inch cake cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then spread with 1/4 cup soft butter. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup each, Dixie Crystals Brown Sugar and chopped pecans. Place under broiler - low heat - until bubbly and lightly browned.
- When the family coaxes for a “really good” syrup for pancakes and waffles, make Brown Sugar Syrup. Just combine 1 pound Dixie Crystals Brown Sugar, 1 cup water and a dash of salt. Stir and heat over medium heat until mixture boils. Cover pan and boil slowly for 10 minutes. If someone insists on maple flavored syrup, just add a few drops maple flavoring.
