Lemon Twizzlers

Lemon Twizzlers

Ingredients

  • Here’s an after-school treat that literally whips up on seconds and is guaranteed to have the troops giggling in minutes. It tastes just like lemonade!
  • 6 large fresh lemons
  • 6 old-fashioned peppermint sugar candy sticks* (about 4 inches long each)

Directions

  1. Roll and squeeze each lemon gently between the palms of your hands to loosen up juice.
  2. Using pointed end of a vegetable peeler or a apple corer, cut a small round hole (about 1-inch from pointed end of lemon) through peel of each lemon.
  3. Insert peppermint stick about 1-inch deep into each lemon through hole. The peppermint candy acts as a sweet straw allowing you to drink lemon juice through candy.
  4. Serve immediately.

Dixie Crystals Insight
  1. This recipe also works well with oranges instead of lemons.
  2. *Peppermint shopping tip: The peppermint sticks used in this recipe are not the glossy hard candy we associate with Christmas. Many of the glossy type candies are just not porous enough to allow the lemon juice to travel through their centers. These peppermint sticks, while still a hard candy, are more porous, with a rough, bisque-like appearance and a thin, red pin-stripe. They are often labeled “old-fashioned” peppermint sticks or peppermint sugar candy. We used King Leo® peppermint sticks from the Good Ole Days Store.
